Philosophy of Mathematics
The influence of mathematics goes beyond real numbers, it is a part of our everyday lives. Even before we learned how to count, we used logic to make decisions such as what toy we wanted to play with or what food we wanted to eat off our plates first. The logic that we used to make such decisions is the foundation of mathematical learning. As we began grade school we learned valuable life skills, such as counting money or following a recipe when cooking. As we grow older we think about how much money we will have saved for retirement when we are at the end of our careers. Although mathematics takes time to learn, and may never be fully learned, it is time well spent.
In a world without math we wouldn’t be able to duplicate our favorite recipe or know how much paint to purchase when we want to decorate our living room. Mathematics helps simplify our lives and gives us something that everyone desires and can’t be bought, time. Math saves us time, instead of counting all the tiles in the kitchen when we want to replace, we can determine the amount that we need with a simple, time saving formula.
When watching any kind of sporting event we are constantly thinking about math. From the final score of the game, to knowing how many more yards our favorite football team needs to cover to make it to the end zone. These moments when we don’t know that we are even applying math to the present situation is usually when it is most fun and easiest for those to learn.
Though we may not think of the time spent learning math as fun, it helps simplify our lives, making our time more enjoyable. A life without math isn’t probable and isn’t possible, it will always be used even when we don’t notice it.
